Holidays, and not just only 4/20, are great for cannabis sales.
For instance, recent data from Eaze.com showed that last year, consumers in California bought 12 percent more cannabis via delivery on Christmas Eve than on a typical Monday of that year. Furthermore, New Year’s Eve saw a 32 percent increase in deliveries, when compared to a regular Monday.
Another big holiday for cannabis is Thanksgiving, with data indicating sales spikes both on the day before and the day after the festivity. According to Headset, the Friday after Thanksgiving witnessed a 21-percent surge in sales, when compared to a typical Friday. For its part, Eaze said deliveries made by its retail partners increased by 136-percent on the Wednesday before Turkey Day.
A Day For Love (Of Cannabis)
Aware of the fact that cannabis sales increase around certain holidays, producers and retailers are now getting ready for Valentine’s Day, an increasingly popular cannabis-friendly festivity. Compliance software company Flowhub noted that Valentine’s Day Weekend 2018 saw 22 percent higher sales than Valentine’s Day Weekend 2017.
But, how does the actual date compare to regular days?
According to BDS Analytics, last year, sales in the recreational markets of in California, Colorado, and Oregon were 3.3 percent higher on Valentine’s Day than on an average February Wednesday.
Greg Shoenfeld, BDS Analytics’ vice president of operations and chief analyst, said that, “While 4/20 is the national weed holiday that delivers the big spike in revenue, Thanksgiving, New Year’s, and Labor Day are other holidays that provide a welcome boost to dispensary coffers. Thus far, Valentine’s Day has been a smaller affair in the cannabis industry but in 2018 there was evidence of increased opportunity on Valentine’s. As the industry matures and new products emerge to tempt an evolving consumer base we can expect the trend to continue. Beyond chocolates and edibles there are infused massage oils and lubricants and other categories that have great opportunity during such a holiday.”
