For over two months, Democrats and Republicans have been calling on congressional leadership to begin efforts to prevent Attorney General Jeff Sessions from cracking down on legal marijuana states, writes Joseph Misulonas.
But now they’re starting to ramp up efforts.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers have launched two new efforts to prevent Sessions and the Department of Justice from beginning a marijuana crackdown.
In the first effort, 59 members of Congress signed a letter to the House Appropriations Committee demanding that they include a provision in an upcoming bill for funding the Justice Department that prohibits the use of money towards pursuing marijuana cases in legal states.
In the second effort, 62 members of Congress signed a letter demanding an extension of current protections of states with medical marijuana, the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer amendment.
It should be noted that this is hardly the first time members of Congress have written to the leadership demanding marijuana protections. And so far, Republicans have been more than happy to ignore them. But with more and more members signing these letters, Republican leadership may have to rethink its position.
Of course, with rumors swirling that Sessions may not be the Attorney General for much longer as the Trump administration continues dumping members of its Cabinet, maybe Congress won’t have to worry too much longer about a crackdown.
