New study finds CBD can help treat psychosis

We know there are many physical conditions that can be treated by CBD, a compound found in marijuana, writes Joseph Misulonas.

But it turns out CBD may also have major mental health benefits as well.

A new study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that CBD helped to prevent psychotic behaviors in patients with schizophrenia.

The researchers in the study created two groups of schizophrenic patients where one group took CBD along with their normal medications and the other group only took their regular prescription.

They found after six weeks, the CBD group had lower rates of psychotic behavior, were deemed more improved and less unwell. They also performed better in cognitive testing, but the scientists said the amount was not statistically significant to make any conclusions.

Overall, the researchers concluded, “These findings suggest that CBD has beneficial effects in patients with schizophrenia. As CBD’s effects do not appear to depend on dopamine receptor antagonism, this agent may represent a new class of treatment for the disorder.”

Ironically, one of the major claims made by anti-marijuana advocates is that marijuana can have a negative effect on a person’s brain chemistry and they argue can lead to psychotic behavior. And yet here’s an actual scientific study saying the opposite.
