Six Notre Dame Football players were arrested Saturday on various charges ranging from possession of marijuana, assault battery, resisting arrest, and possession of an illegal firearm. The two separate incidents took place within the same district but at different times.
Five of the six players were arrested by Indiana Police Friday night when a traffic stop revealed the smell of marijuana in the vehicle. K-9 units were called to the scene and indicated that the presence of drugs was evident, and a search was justified. Police uncovered a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle along with an unlicensed handgun. While all of the men were arrested, only three were charged with carrying an unlicensed firearm. The Players currently facing charges are
- Te’Von Coney
- Ashton White
- Kevin Stepherson Jr.
- Max Redfield
- Dexter Williams
Later, in the early morning hours Saturday, Devon Butler, a cornerback for the University was arrested by police on suspicion of battery and resisting arrest. Officers reported responding to a bar on South Bend where another police officer described being punched and slammed to the ground by Butler.
Butler is being held at the county jail and scheduled to be arraigned on Monday. The other five men posted bond and were released.
Notre Dame, when asked about any disciplinary action for the players released this statement:
“Any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university,” he said in an email. “The university will determine if additional sanctions should apply to any or all of the students charged.”
Notre Dame itself is gearing up for its preseason. After just completing training camp, the players and coaches will be scrambling to update their lineup. The first game of the season is on the horizon and the pot smoking, gun toting students with something to prove might have ruined a good season.
