Come learn about weeds during this gardening class, “Identifying and Managing Weeds”, presented by the Pend Oreille County Master Gardeners, on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the WSU/Pend Oreille County Extension Office, 227 S. Garden Ave., Newport from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

Weed specialist Loretta Nichols from the Pend Oreille County Noxious Weed Control Board and Master Gardener Foundation president, will discuss types and toxicity of noxious weeds found in the county, both common and less often found, dangerous invasive species. Class participants are invited to bring weed samples from their own properties to the class for identification. If possible, samples should include roots, stems, leaves and flowers.

“We will try to help identify weed species and provide advice on proper management. After all, it’s not all about knapweed”, says Nichols. Pend Oreille County Master Gardeners, armed with all their WSU resources, will also be on hand to help identify weeds.

The cost for the class is $5 for community members (bring a friend, neighbor or spouse for just an extra $2) and $3 for Master Gardeners.

All funds raised from the class will be used by the local Master Gardener Foundation to provide gardening education programs to the community. Please pre-register by calling the WSU/Pend Oreille County Extension Office at 1-509-447-2401 to provide contact information should the class schedule change and ensure adequate materials for all participants will be available.

WSU Extension programs are offered without regard to race; sex; religion; age; color; creed; national or ethnic origin; physical, mental or sensory disability; marital status; sexual orientation; and/or status as a Vietnam-era or disabled veteran. Persons with a disability requiring special accommodations while participating in this program may call 1-509-447-2401 at least 14 days before the program.
